Finding joy

This morning, I read this article in the New Yorker about the “the double rainbow guy” whose video went viral back in 2010. He passed away recently, but the article describes the joy and positivity he brought to every aspect of his life. I couldn’t help but smile as I read the article and feel inspired by his positivity and wanted to share that.

Lately, I’ve been working on having a more positive outlook on my day to day. I started taking a popular Yale course offered on Coursera for free called “The Science of Wellbeing“. Over 10 weeks, the course teaches you the psychology behind feeling happier and assigns weekly “rewirements”, such as incorporating meditation, gratitude and exercise into your daily routine, all proven to boost happiness. I’m five weeks in and to be honest, I’m feeling more of a benefit that I thought I would. In particular, focusing on savouring moments and practicing gratitude has made a big difference for me so far.

Some things I’m grateful for lately:

  • My morning coffee
  • Fresh tulips on my bookcase
  • Weekly video calls with family & friends
  • The couple hours a day where I have sunshine on my balcony

Another area of my life brining me joy right now is listening to music that lifts my mood. I created a “Good Morning” playlist on Spotify, but it’s great to listen to any time of day. I’ve also been listening to “Classic Road Trip Songs” because it reminds me of summertime road trips and trips to my grandpa’s cottage.

What’s bringing you joy right now?
